ARCELOR MITTAL DOFASCO  ll  ALTERNATIVE STANDARDS  ll  HEALTH INFORMATION

FROM THE NEIGHBOURS  ll    RESOURCES AND TOOLS  ll  BLOG

This campaign will aim to open lines of communication between industry and the community in order to create better working relations and create positive change. Our efforts are modeled after the approach used by Ohio Citizen Action; the organization that not only developed the Good Neighbor Campaign concept, but used it to produce substantial and beneficial changes within their community. These changes have included persuading companies such as the Sunoco Oil Refinery to commit to investing over $100 million in new pollution control equipment and implement new programs to reduce emissions by 75%.

Our goal is to bring together a group of citizens who are passionate about creating positive change within their communities. The group will act as a new voice to industry and emissions, and will center its efforts on the issues pertaining specifically to ArcelorMittal-Dofasco. These issues will include, and will not be limited to: the company’s overproduction of cancer causing agents, the black fallout and odors which create health and safety concerns, and the company’s request for Alternate Standards.

We realize that ArcelorMittal-Dofasco is, and will continue to be a part of this community, thus: the campaign has NO intention of shutting down the plant. Rather, we plan to work with the company to not only encourage them to clean up their act, but to  become a Good Neighbour to the community in which it is a part.

CURRENT CAMPAIGN ACTION : HOW YOU CAN HELP

POSTCARDS AGAINST POLLUTION!

GNC Postcard1.jpgGNC Postcard.jpg

The postcard campaign provides a way for individuals, groups, and organizations across the city to send a strong message to Mr. Juergen Schachler, CEO of ArcelorMittal-Dofasco. By signing a postcard and encouraging others to do so, you are supporting the following goals:

  • You are showing the company that you and your community care about the quality of Hamilton’s air.
  • You are helping to raise awareness about the company’s overproduction of cancer-causing agents.
  • You are taking initiative to help make your neighbourhood a healthier, and safer place to live by encouraging the company to become a good neighbour.

These postcards will be gathered and presented to the company collectively (in addition to the letters!). Thus, all postcards should be returned to the Environment Hamilton office (1130 Barton Street, Suite 207). If you require, or would like a postcard pick-up, please contact us at 905-549-0900 or email us at kstiel@environmenthamilton.org.

Postcards can be obtained in the following ways:

1) Visit the Environment Hamilton office.

2) Visit us at an event within the community.

3) Contact us and have us drop some off to you.

4) Print your own by clicking the links below.

The success of this campaign depends on the participation of people of all ages, areas, and backgrounds -- every postcard counts!

Campaign Update - March 10th, 2010

Canvassers/Volunteers Needed!

The GNC will be doing a neighbourhood canvass starting next week and we are looking for volunteers to help us go door to door. We will be going in teams (volunteers will not be travelling alone) and we will be providing training before-hand to ensure everyone feels comfortable and prepared. The goal of this canvass will be to collect as many signatures as possible for the postcard campaign in addition to raising awareness about the GNC. Whether you are a high school student needing volunteer hours or a resident looking to help give back to the community, we need your friendly faces and enthusiasm!

Proposed Dates: Monday March 15th, Tuesday March 16, Saturday March 20, Sunday March 21

Proposed Times: Mid-Afternoon to Early Evening

Areas to Be Canvassed: Dalhousie Ave to Cluny Ave, Cope St to Kenilworth Ave N, and Stapleton Ave to Woodleigh Ave

**** Please note: We are willing to work with the schedules and preferences of volunteers. Please let us know what dates and times work for you!

Filming

Thank you to those who have expressed interest in being part of our documentary! If you would still like to be involved, it's not too late! Our first filming date will be this Friday (after 3pm) and this Saturday (until 3pm). If you would be willing to share your stories with us, (keep in mind we will still be offering the option of confidentiality) and are available during these times, please contact us at kstiel@environmenthamilton.org

Postcard Update

The postcards keep rolling in! Big thanks to everyone thus far! As mentioned, we are planning to present these postcards to the company collectively at the Ministry of Environment's public meeting. This meeting will be to announce the granting of the standard and it will be a great opportunity for us to come together as a community to present our letters and postcards to both the ministry and the company.

The date for this meeting has yet to be set. This is frustrating for us because with no confirmed date, it makes it makes it hard to determine when we should aim to have all the postcards back to us by. We were originally told, (back in December) that the meeting was supposed to occur in February 2010.

Thus, for now, let's aim to have the postcards signed and returned by Friday April 7th.

We will keep everyone in the loop as to any updates on the Ministry's meeting date.
